General characteristics of the Chinese language

Classifiers

In this article, we explain a class of grammar that we don’t have in the Italian language: so-called classifiers (as sinologists call them) or numerators (as Japanese linguists call them) that are there, even with differences, much more so in Chinese than Japanese.

In brief, classifiers (in Chinese) are inserted between the number and noun so as to formulate the numeral or quantitative constructions (10 pens, 5 books, etc). For each class of nouns, there’s an appropriate classifier that unfortunately you need to know and study.

Predicative adjectives

In this article, we explain the adjectives in Chinese and why they are commonly designated as predicative or attributive. They are called this because they have the intrinsic value of the predicate (the verb “to be”), so all adjectives aren’t simply translated with “tall”, “short”, “skinny”, “fat”, but rather with “to be tall”. “to be short”, “to be skinny”, “to be fat”.

The particle of determination 的 (de)

In this article, we speak about a characteristic structure of the Chinese language, the “determining – determined” structure. The determining is what determines, specifies or characterizes something else, the determined.

For example, in the syntagm “I like delicious food”, “delicious” is determining the “food”, because it tells us a characteristic of the determined “food”. At times, the determiners can be actual phrases that are separated by the determined by a comma.

Directional complements, verbs and prepositions

Constructions with 把 (ba)

Frequently asked questions

Is Chinese grammar similar to English?
Chinese grammar is fairly easy to learn and often similar to English. Look at modifiers, for example, where the Chinese always use a Subject-Verb-Object. If you learn Chinese, you’ll most likely not struggle with the grammar, but to learn how to write characters, learn how to pronounce the tones, and idioms, which are widely used even in spoken Chinese.
Is there past tense in Chinese?
One of the beauties of learning Chinese is that they don’t have any past tense, which makes it so much easier to learn. Instead of conjugating verbs, they simply put a ‘le’ (了) after the verb. For example, “I eat food” is written as “我吃饭, Wǒ chī fàn”. However, if you say “I ate food yesterday”, the Chinese will simply say “我昨天吃了饭, Wǒ zuótiān chīle fàn‘.
Is Chinese harder than Japanese?
Some people claim that Japanese is harder than Chinese and vice versa. Generally speaking, the grammar is easier in Chinese. Besides, the fact that they don’t conjugate verbs or have any gender differences makes the language easier to learn. Having said that, Japanese is easier in the sense that there are no tones, words are easier to pronounce (at least for most westerners), and their alphabets/characters are not as difficult to learn.

In Japanese, you have to pay much attention to how you address people, according to their profession and age. That’s generally not the case when speaking Chinese.

How long does it take to learn Chinese fluently?
Hard to say as it’s a highly individual question. In general, be prepared to study Chinese daily for at least 2-3 years before you become fluent.
Can Japanese people read the Chinese language?
Yes, the Japanese have two different alphabets called Hiragana and Katakana. Besides, they also have a writing system called Kanji which includes Chinese characters which symbolize whole words. As such, the Japanese can learn how to read Chinese quicker than many other foreigners.

Japanese newspapers usually have around 70% Kanji, 20% hiragana, and 10% katakana. Therefore, a majority of the text is Kanji and the same as Chinese characters.

How many characters do you need to know to be fluent in Chinese?
In general, Chinese people need to learn 1,500 – 2,000 characters to be considered fluent. However, this doesn’t mean that you only have to learn 1,500 – 2,000 words. Your Chinese proficiency level will rather be determined based on the number of words you know, and not only the amount of characters.
Is there a Chinese alphabet?
No, there’s no alphabet in Chinese, like in most other languages. Yet, they do have the pinyin system that is a system of symbols showing phonetic notation of all Chinese characters.
Is Pinyin and Mandarin the same?
Pinyin is an alphabet and a romanization of Chinese characters. In short, the pinyin system helps you understand how Chinese characters are pronounced, including the tones. For example, the word for cat, 猫, will be written as Māo in pinyin.
